Louisiana is a national leader in the fields of oil and gas production, information technology, healthcare and tourism. Natural disasters in the form of two major hurricanes in recent years were a set back to the tourism industry, energy production and general economy of the state; but at the same time offered opportunities for rebuilding and growth in other areas.
Social assistance, specifically community food and housing and emergency relief, is still an expanding industry in Louisiana due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. As psychology is a study that strives to understand and benefit human beings, graduates are often perfectly suited for careers in social assistance.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field as a whole to grow 11% through 2018, with some areas of specialization growing as fast as 48%. The need for home health aides alone has grown nearly 75% in Louisiana since 2004. Occupational therapy has grown by nearly 50%. The demand for social assistance and social service workers is especially high in rural areas and inner-city neighborhoods. And, like many of its southern neighbors, Louisiana has a continuing need for healthcare workers. According to the Louisiana Occupational Information System, careers in healthcare for psychology graduates that continue to grow include childcare, laboratory technicians, nursing aides, and health information technicians.
Careers in communications and technology also remain in expansion. Psychology graduates excel in these areas due to their understanding of human behavior, their background in research methodologies, and their skill in interpreting and communicating findings. Communications analysts, advertising and promotions managers, customer support, workplace behavior, and recruiting are just a few of these career options that have been growing in recent years.
As the state continues to recover from recent environmental disasters, tourism will continue to make a comeback as the state’s second-largest industry behind healthcare. The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism recently launched the “Louisiana Rebirth” program to rebuild the tourism and cultural industries of the state. Graduates in psychology have a great opportunity in this industry due to their social perceptiveness, their interest in working with people, and strong interpersonal skills.
