Like a number of states whose economies traditionally relied on the production of goods, the employment picture in the state of Maine has changed tremendously over the last 20 years. Today, according to the Maine Department of Labor, just 15% of jobs are in goods-producing industries, with the majority of opportunities now being found in one of many service sectors of the economy.

The BLS also notes that in service-oriented economies, those with bachelor’s degrees have much lower unemployment. In 2009, those with a bachelor’s degree suffered an unemployment rate of approximately 5.2% compared with a 9.7% rate for those with only a high school diploma.
Psychology graduates work in any area where understanding human behavior is involved. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, individuals with bachelor’s degrees in psychology often find employment in areas related to sales, advertising, marketing, case management, and labor relations. Graduates in Maine work in a number of other human-service oriented fields as well. Those interested in criminal justice go on to work as parole and probation officers and in correctional treatment. Others work in industry, tourism, and information technology, applying the skills learned in a bachelor’s degree program including quantitative analysis, observation, and interpersonal communication.
