Health Psychologist

Learn how to become a Health Psychologist and why you might want to...

A recent study evaluating the effect of depression on people’s immune systems revealed those who are depressed are twice as susceptible to disease.1 Health psychology is a new and growing field of study linking mental health to physical illness.

Health psychologists strive to understand how multiple factors interact and affect health and illness. They evaluate the biological, behavioral and social conditions of their clients in order to research, assess and provide treatment.

The research health psychologists conduct gives them the opportunity to educate others and possibly prevent disease. Some of the most crucial research to date has been with the deadly virus HIV/AIDS. They are yet to prove the link between attitude and progression of HIV but health psychologists have enough evidence to know that there is a major impact.1 Having this information, psychologists in this field have the opportunity to help patients improve their mental health and slow down the development of AIDS while also increasing the quality and longevity of life.

While health psychologists currently make most consistent progress through research, they often help people in clinical settings as well with the use of interventions. This process includes teaching the patient and often their families the importance of managing mental health. Health psychologists help patients develop techniques to use at home such as stress management and relaxation therapies.

The fact that health psychology is a relatively new field presents health psychologists with a series of challenges. For example, the general population may not be aware of the benefits of a health psychologist.  Even if a medical doctor recommends a visit, it is likely patients will be skeptical. However, this mentality is changing quickly as links between stress and health becomes more basic public knowledge.

A career as a health psychologist opens the door to a connection most professionals have considered but have been unable to provide factual basis for, the link between mental and physical health. Not only is their research exciting and cutting edge; it also allows these professionals to help people who have been thrown into difficult situations.
