How to become a Marriage and Family Therapist

Learn how to earn a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license

Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) licensure requirements consist of three elements for most states:

  1. Completion of a Master's or PhD program in Marriage and Family Therapy or a related psychology field
  2. A set amount of supervised professional experience
  3. Successful completion of a state MFT licensing exam (not necessary in all states)

The Marriage and Family Therapist licensure is a prerequisite aimed at eliminating unqualified individuals from practicing and subjecting clients in need of psychological assistance from negligence, misdiagnosis and treatment.

However, licensing requirements are typically educational and experiential mile markers for individuals serious about learning the practice and having a positive effect on people's lives.
