Florida Social Work Licensure

How to become a Social Worker in Florida

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their social work licensure in Florida. Most procedures and requirements remain constant over the years; however, it is wise to contact the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work at (850) 245-4474 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow the steps to earn your Florida Social Work License:

Step One:

To receive a Florida clinical social worker license, you will need to earn your masters or doctoral degree from an approved school.

Request information from schools offering social work degree programs.

Step Two:

Florida social work licensure requirements indicate certain coursework needs to be met while receiving your degree. To learn more about these requirements, look at the 2013 Laws and Rules from the following Florida Department of Health webpage.

Step Three:

In addition to specific coursework, you will need to complete at least 2 years of clinical social work experience under the guidance of a qualified supervisor. If your graduate program did not meet the stated education requirements, independent study coursework can be used to make up for any deficiencies.

Check the 2013 Laws and Rules for more details on the independent study and clinical supervised work.

Step Four:

Next, you can download the application for Florida social work licensure by exam and submit all necessary forms and fees.

You can download the Florida social work license application here.

Step Five:

Once your application has been reviewed and has gained approval, you will be eligible to sit for the exam developed by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB).

You can find more information about the Florida Social Work Licensure examination on the ASWB website.

This process can take some time, so being aware of deadlines and keeping your Florida Social Worker license active is important.
