How to become a Social Worker in Maine

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their social work licensure in Maine. Most procedures and requirements remain constant over the years; however, it is wise to contact the State of Maine Board of Social Work Licensure at (207) 624-8674 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow the steps to earn your Maine Social Work License:

Choose one of the following licensure options for social workers in the state of Maine. Each licensure has different requirements for licensing; therefore, it may be wise to explore all options to see which licensure best fits your situation and career goals:

Maine Licensed Social Worker

Step One:

To become eligible for a Maine Licensed Social Worker License, you will need your bachelors degree in social work from an accredited school or have received your Maine conditional social worker license.

Request information from schools offering social work degree programs.

Step Two:

Once you have completed the social work program or received your Maine conditional social work license, you will need to pass the Bachelors Examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.

Information about the examination contents, dates, locations and registration can be found on the ASWB website.

Step Three:

Next, you can download and complete the Maine licensed social work licensure application. You will then need to submit the application including all necessary fees to the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure. Within the application, you will need to provide information for the consultation that you will be involved in once you begin work. The Board will notify you when the application is accepted.

Step Four:

After receiving your Maine social work license, you will need to follow up with the Board and provide proof of carrying out 96 hours of consultation outlined in the application submitted prior to licensing within the first 3200 hours of employment as a social worker.

Conditional Licensed Social Work License:

Step One:

You will need your bachelors degree from an accredited school in a field closely related to social work.

Request information from psychology schools and colleges.

Step Two:

You will also need to be employed in a social service field and be able to submit proof of your employment to the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure.

Step Three:

Next, you will need to download the Maine Conditional Social Work Licensure application and submit it to the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure. Within the application you will need to fill out a form outlining the consultation arrangements you plan to complete once licensed.

Step Four:

The Maine Board of Social Work Licensure will contact you once your application has been approved. At that point you can begin documenting your consultation requirements. The conditional license can be renewed once in order to complete the required consultation hours. At that point, you can continue the process toward earning your full social worker licensure.

Licensed Master Social Work License:

Step One:

To practice as a licensed master social worker in Maine, you will need at least a masters degree in social work or social welfare from an accredited school.

Request information from psychology schools and colleges.

Step Two:

Secondly, you will need to sit for and pass the Masters level examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.

Step Three:

Next, you will need to download the Maine Master Social Work Licensure application which includes other supporting documents and submit that to the Maine Board of Social Work Licensure along with all necessary fees.

You may download the application off the Maine Office of Licensing and Registration website.

Step Four:

Once the Board has reviewed your application they will notify you of your licensure status.

This process can take some time, so being aware of deadlines and keeping your Maine Social Worker license active is important.

Licensed Clinical Social Work License:

Step One:

You will need at least a masters degree in social work from an accredited school in order to qualify for a licensed clinical social worker license in the state of Maine.

Request information from psychology schools and colleges.

Step Two:

You will also need to hold a current LMSW Conditional license (download the LMSW Conditional License application here) and have completed a clinical internship during the time you were conditionally licensed.

Step Three:

Before you can apply for licensure, you will need to take and pass the Clinical level examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.

Step Four:

Once you have completed all the above requirements and passed the examination, you can download the Maine Clinical Social Work Licensure application and submit it and all necessary fees to the Maine State Board of Social Work Licensure.

Step Five:

The Board will review your application and all supporting document. Once you have been approved, they will notify you of your licensure.

This process can take some time, so being aware of deadlines and keeping your Maine Social Worker license active is important.

Conditional Clinical Licensed Master Social Worker:

Step One:

For a conditional clinical licensed master social worker license, you will need to have completed a masters degree program in social work from an accredited school.

Request information from psychology schools and colleges.

Step Two:

You will need to pass the Intermediate level examination provided by the Association of Social Work Boards.

Step Three:

Now you can download the Maine social work licensure application and submit it to the Maine Board of Social Work Licensure. Within the application is a form for you to provide a clinical internship plan that you will take part in once licensed.

Step Four:

Once the Board has approved your application and received all necessary fees, they will notify you of your licensure. This conditional license can be renewed as many times as you want without continuing on to the full clinical licensure. Each renewal will need to meet the same round of consultation requirements that are outlined in the rules on the following Maine Board of Social Work Licensure webpage.
