Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Alabama. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy at (334) 215-7233 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Alabama MFT License:
Step One:
To become a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) in Alabama, you need at least a masters degree from an approved educational institution in marriage and family therapy.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
The next step is to become a MFT associate. In addition to a masters degree, you will also need to complete an internship either during the time you are receiving your master's degree or post-degree.
This includes a minimum of a 1 year internship, 100 supervised hours by an approved supervisor, and 500 direct client contact hours which should be completed at the same time as the supervised hours. Step Three:
Once you are an approved MFT associate, the Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy will register you as an eligible candidate for the PES administered exam.

Step Four:
Before you can apply for your LMFT, you will need two years of full-time work experience. Also required is 200 hours of supervision, 100 of which must be individual, and 1000 direct client hours completed with the required supervision.
