Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Connecticut. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Connecticut Department of Public Health at (860) 509-8000 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Connecticut MFT License:
Step One:
To practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Connecticut you must first receive a masters or doctoral degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
You also need to complete a supervised internship or practicum reaching at least 500 clinical hours, 100 of which need to be directly supervised. This may be done while receiving your graduate degree. At least 1000 hours of direct client postgraduate work over at least a period of a year is also necessary for Connecticut Marriage and Family Therapy licensure.

Step Three:
Next, you will need to download and submit the application for Connecticut Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) licensure. Included with your application, you will need to send proof of completed supervised hours.

Step Four:
Once your application is approved, you will be eligible to sit for the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards examination.
