Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Hawaii. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Hawaii Professional and Vocational Licensing at (808) 586-3000 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Hawaii MFT License:
Step One:
To become licensed as a marriage and family therapist you need to earn your masters or doctoral degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
The Hawaii Board of Professional and Vocational Licensing requires certain coursework to be completed during your degree program and a one year practicum or internship of 300 hours of supervised direct client contact in order to be eligible for Hawaii Marriage and Family Therapy licensure.

Step Three:
After your MFT degree program has been completed, you will need to complete 1000 hours of work experience and 200 hours of supervision in no less than 2 years.

Step Four:
Once all work experience has been met, you can download the Hawaii Marriage and Family Therapy license application and submit it to the Hawaii Board of Professional and Vocational Licensing along with all other necessary forms.

Step Five:
The Hawaii Board for Professional and Vocational Licensing will review your application and once it is approved, you will be eligible to take the National Marriage and Family Therapy Exam.
