Idaho Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in ID

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Idaho. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licenses at cou@ibol.idaho.gov to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Idaho MFT License:

Step One:

To practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Idaho, you will need to earn a masters degree at minimum, including a practicum or internship.

Step Two:

After receiving your graduate degree you will need to meet the 3000 hours of supervised work experience. 2000 of these hours should be completed in no less than 2 years and should be in direct client contact. The last 1000 hours need to be spent directly with couples and families. A qualified supervisor should provide at least 200 hours of supervision.

Step Three:

Once you have completed the required hours of experience for Idaho Marriage and Family Therapy licensure, you will want to download and submit your application.

Step Four:

The Board will review your application and once approved you will be eligible to take the National Marital and Family Therapy Examination. You must submit a Notification of Intent to Sit to the Board 45 days from the exam date you have chosen.
