Illinois Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in IL

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Illinois. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at (217)-782-8556 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Illinois MFT License:

Step One:

In order to become a licensed marriage and family therapist in Illinois, you will need at least a masters degree from an accredited school.

Step Two:

After earning the appropriate degree, you will need to complete a minimum of 3000 hours of supervised work experience. 1000 of these hours need to be in direct client contact.

Step Three:

Once the above requirements are met, you can download your application and submit it to the Illinois Department of Finance and Professional Regulations for review.

Step Four:

After the Board has approved your application, you will be eligible to register for the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.
