Iowa Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in IA

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Iowa. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Iowa Board of Behavioral Sciences at (515) 281-7689 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Iowa MFT License:

Step One:

To become eligible for an Iowa Marriage and Family Therapy license, you will need to have earned at least your masters degree from an accredited school including a 300 hour internship.

Step Two:

After receiving your degree, you will need to complete at least 2 years of full-time clinical experience. The work experience needs to be under the supervision of a Board approved supervisor and consist of at least 200 face-to-face hours within each 1000 hours obtained.

Step Three:

At this point, you will need to download and submit an Iowa Marriage and Family Therapy licensure application to the Iowa Bureau of Professional Licensure.

Step Four:

The Iowa Bureau of Professional Licensure will review your application and, once it is approved, will notifiy you of your eligibility to sit for the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB) Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.
