Louisiana Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Louisiana. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners at (225) 765-2515 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Louisiana MFT License:
Step One:
To practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in Louisiana, you will need at least a masters degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
After earning your masters degree, you will need two years of supervised experience working as a marriage and family therapist. These two years should equal 3000 hours of experience, 2000 of them should be working directly with clients and under a qualified supervisor.

Step Three:
Next, you will need to download the Louisiana Marriage and Family Therapy licensure application and mail it, including any other necessary forms and fees, to the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.

Step Four:
Once you are approved by the Louisiana Board of Examiners advisory committee, you can take the national marriage and family therapy examination.
