Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Maryland. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists at (410)-764-4732 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Maryland MFT License:
Step One:
To practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Maryland, you will need at least a masters degree in marriage and family therapy from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
You will also need have a minimum of 2 years supervised clinical work experience which should equal at least 2000 hours of work. These hours need to be under the supervision of a qualified supervisor and include direct client contact and direct supervision.

Step Three:
Once your work experience has been completed, you can download the Maryland Marriage and Family Therapy licensure application and submit the application along with all necessary forms and fees to the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists.

Step Four:
The Board will review your application and notify you when you are eligible to sit for the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy provided by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.
Maryland also requires that you pass a Board of Professional Counselors and Therapist administered examination covering laws and regulations. You may contact the Board for information about the laws and regulations exam here.
