Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Massachusetts. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure at (617) 727-3074 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Massachusetts MFT License:

Step One:

In order to qualify for a Massachusetts marriage and family therapist license, you will need to earn a masters degree from an accredited school.

Step Two:

After completing your masters degree program, you will need to accumulate 3360 hours of supervised experience which should take no lesss than 2 years through a Massachusetts Board approved organization.

Step Three:

Once the work experience requirements have been met, you can download the Massachusetts marriage and family therapy licensure application and submit the application along with all other supporting documents and fees to the Massachusetts Board of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions.

The Board will review your application and notify you of your eligibiliy to sit for the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards.
