Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Michigan. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy at (517) 335-0918 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Michigan MFT License:
Step One:
To practice as a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of Michigan, you will need to earn a masters degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
Next, you will need to earn 1000 hours of supervised work experience. At least half of the required hours need to be direct counseling of families and couples with a qualified supervisor.

Step Three:
After completing work experience requirements, you will need to submit a Michigan marriage and family therapy license application along with all other supporting documents and fees to the Michigan Board of Marriage and Family Therapy.

Step Four:
The Board will review your application and notify you once it has been approved. At that time you will be eligible to take the National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy administered by the Association of Marital and Family Regulatory Boards.
