Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Minnesota. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapists at (612) 617-2220 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Minnesota MFT License:
Step One:
To qualify for a Minnesota marriage and family therapist license, you will need to earn a masters degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
After gaining the necessary education, you can apply to take the National Examination. By submitting an exam application now, you will be able to take the exam soon after your full licensure application is approved.

Step Three:
Next, you will need to complete the Application to Start Post-Degree Supervised Experience. Once you have downloaded the form and submitted it to the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy, you can begin earning the 2 years of required experience under a qualified supervisor.

Step Four:
Now, you can submit the Minnesota marriage and family license application for full licensure and an application for the State Exam to the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. Once the Board reviews your licensure application, supporting documents and receives the proper fees, you will be notified of your eligibility to sit for the National Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.
