Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Mississippi. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Mississippi State Board of Examiners For Social Workers and Marriage & Family Therapists at (601) 987-6806 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Mississippi MFT License:
Step One:
To qualify for a Mississippi marriage and family therapist license, you will need to complete a masters degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
After completing a masters level degree program, you will need to complete 2 years of supervised clinical work experience. At least 1000 hours needs to be in direct client contact. One of the two years can be acquired while still earning your graduate degree.
In addition, you will need to submit an application for post-graduate work experience. You can download the application from the Mississippi State Board of Examiners' website. More information about the hourly requirements and qualifications of supervisors can be found here.
Step Three:
Once your work experience requirements have been met, you can download the Mississippi marriage and family therapy license application and submit the application, along with all other supporting documents and fees, to the Mississippi State Board of Examiners for Social Workers and Marriage and Family Therapists.

Step Four:
The Board will review your application and notify you once you are approved to take the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy with instructions for registration.
