Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in New Hampshire. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the New Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice at (603) 217-6762 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your New Hampshire MFT License:
Step One:
Receive a master’s or doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education or earn a graduate degree in the field of Marriage and Family Therapy from a regionally accredited institution.

- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
Download, complete and submit the Request to sit for the Marriage and Family Therapy Exam form to the New Hampshire Board office.

Step Three:
Once your request has been approved, you may sit for the New Hampshire MFT licensure exam. More information about the MFT examination contents, locations, dates and registration may be found on the AMFTRB website.
Step Four:
Complete a minimum of 2 years of post-masters experience in a mental health counseling setting, including a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised practice of marriage and family therapy. You will also need to complete 200 hours of face to face supervision.
In addition, supervisors need to be approved by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy or the New Hampshire Board. Step Five:
Finally, you will need to download, complete and submit a New Hampshire marriage and family therapy licensure application. You will need to submit all additional necessary forms, transcripts and fees back to the New Hampshire Board.
