Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in New Mexico. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the New Mexico Licensing and Regulation Department at (505) 476-4610 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your New Mexico MFT License:
Step One:
In New Mexico, you will need at least a masters degree from an accredited school to become eligible for New Mexico MFT licensure.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
You are also required to begin 2 years of supervised work experience, or 3000 hours, after receiving your degree with 1000 of these hours dedicated to working directly in clinical marriage and family therapy settings.

Step Three:
Now you can download the New Mexico marriage and family therapy license application and submit the application along with all supporting documents and fees to the New Mexico Counseling and Therapy Practice Board.

Step Four:
The Board will review your application and will approve your licensure once they receive the official examination scores from the Examination for Marital and Family Therapy.
