Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in North Dakota. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board at (701)-223-2986 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your North Dakota MFT License:

Step One:

You will need to gain a masters or doctoral level education from an accredited school in order to qualify for a North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy license.

Or request information from additional schools offering Marriage and Family Therapy programs in North Dakota. If you have not completed a bachelor's degree program yet, Click Here.

Step Two:

You will need to pass an examination that has been adopted by the North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy Licensure Board. This will allow you to acquire an Associate Marriage and Family Therapy License which is valid for one year, but can be renewed 4 times. Under the Associate MFT License, you are only allowed to work under the supervision of a board qualified supervisor.

Or,

Complete 2 calendar years of supervised work experience under a board qualified supervisor. After completion of this work experience, you will be eligible for a North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy License.

Or,

Complete 5 years of successful Marriage and Family Therapy work experience. After this experience is verified by the board, you will be eligible for a North Dakota Marriage and Family Therapy License.
