Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Rhode Island. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Rhode Island Office of Health Professionals Regulation at (401) 222-1057 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Rhode Island MFT License:
Step One:
To become eligible for a Rhode Island marriage and family therapist license, you will need at least a masters degree from an accredited school.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
You are also required to have 2 years of post-graduate supervised professional experience with at least 2000 hours of direct client contact.

Step Three:
Next, you will need to download the Rhode Island marriage and family therapy license application and submit the application to the Rhode Island Board of Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists. Along with the application, make sure to include all supporting forms and fees.

Step Four:
After the Rhode Island Board has reviewed and approved your licensure application, you will receive an exam application packet from the Professional Examination Service. Rhode Island requires you to pass The Marital and Family Therapy Examination to qualify for MFT licensure.
