Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in South Carolina. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation at (803) 896-4300 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your South Carolina MFT License:
Step One:
You will need at least a masters degree from an accredited school in order to become eligible for South Carolina marriage and family therapist licensure.
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
Once your education requirements have been met, you will need to apply for a marriage and family therapy internship. Download the South Carolina MFT Intern application and submit the application to the South Carolina Board of Examiners.
Step Three:
When the Board has approved your educational requirements, you will receive a registration form to take the national Examination in Marital and Family Therapy.

Step Four:
Now you can begin the required supervised professional experience. You will need to acquire 3000 hours of clinical experience over no less than 2 years. 1500 of these hours need to be completed once your degree has been earned.

Step Five:
Next, you will need to submit a South Carolina MFT license application. First, download the application, then return the application to the South Carolina Board along with all supporting forms and fees.

Step Six:
The South Carolina Board of Examiners will review your application and exam scores sent by the exam administrators. The Board will then send you the official Board results after a few weeks indicating whether you have earned a South Carolina Marriage and Family Therapy license.
