South Dakota Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in SD

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in South Dakota. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the South Dakota Board for Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists at (605) 331-2927 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your South Dakota MFT License:

Step One:

You will first need to complete at least a master's degree program from an accredited school in order to satisfy the educational requirements for South Dakota Marriage and Family Therapist licensure.

Step Two:

After receiving your master's degree, you will need to submit a plan of supervision to the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners prior to beginning the necessary work experience requirement. After receiving approval, you will need 2 years of documented supervised work experience.

Step Three:

Next, you can submit a South Dakota MFT licensure application to the South Dakota Board of Counselor Examiners. You will also need to include supporting documents and the required application processing fees as indicated on the application itself. You may download the application here.

Step Four:

After the South Dakota Board of Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists have evaluated your application, you will be notified of your approval to site for the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy. Your passing scores will need to be sent to the Board for completion of your application process. More information about the exam can be found on the AMFTRB website.
