Tennessee Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in TN

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Tennessee. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Tennessee Board for Professional Counselors and Marital and Family Therapist at (615) 532-3202, ext. 25138 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Tennessee MFT License:

Step One:

Tennessee MFT licensure requires applicants to possess at least a master's degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related, field from an accredited school.

Step Two:

Following the completion of your master's degree, you will need to complete 2 years of supervised clinical experience. This should include at least 1000 hours of work experience and 200 hours of supervision.

Step Three:

The next step is to submit a Tennessee Marriage and Family Therapist licensure application to the Tennessee Board for Professional Counselors and Marital and Family Therapist. Be sure to include all supporting forms and required application processing fees in your application packet.

Step Four:

Once the Board has approved your application, you will receive a registration form for the Professional Examination Service (PES) written examination created by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AMFTRB).

Once you have passed the written examination, the Board’s administrative office will send you a notice of your eligibility to take the state administered oral exam no less than 30 days prior to your scheduled testing date.
