Utah Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure
Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in UT
Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Utah. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing at (801) 530-6628 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Utah MFT License:
Step One:
You will first need to complete a master's or doctoral degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy or is accredited by a professional accrediting body that is approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation of the American Council on Education and completes the specific coursework that is shown on pages 11 and 12 of the Utah Marriage and Family Therapist licensure application (you may download the application here).
- Capella University - Master's of Science in Human Services (HS) - Marital, Couple, and Family Counsel/Therapy
- Grand Canyon University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Liberty University - Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy
- Saybrook Graduate School - Master's in Psychology (Marriage and Family Therapy specialization)

Step Two:
You will also need to earn 4000 hours of supervised work experience in a period of no less than 2 years. More information and supervisor qualifications can be found in the Licensing Act Rules.
Step Three:
Next, you will need to submit a Utah Marriage and Family Therapist licensure application to the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing. Be sure to include all supporting forms and application processing fees that are indicated on the application.

Step Four:
The Division will do an initial review of your application and once approved you will be notified of your eligibility to register for the national Marital and Family Therapist Examination. Once the Division receives your passing scores, you will be issued a license.
