Virginia Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Learn how to earn your MFT licensure in VA

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Virginia. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Virginia Board of Counseling at (804) 367-4610 to make sure you are on the right track.

Follow these steps to earn your Virginia MFT License:

Step One:

You will first need to complete a minimum of a master's degree program to fulfill your educational requirements for Virginia Marriage and Family Therapist licensure.

Step Two:

Then you will need to register a supervision contract with the Virginia Board of Counseling. Once the Board has received your contract, you can begin 4000 hours of supervised work experience. Step Three:

Next, you will need to submit a Virginia Marriage and Family Therapist licensure application to the Virginia Board including all supporting documents and fees. You may download the application here. Step Four:

The Board will review your application and once approved, you will receive notification that you are eligible to sit for the National Marriage and Family Therapy Examination.
