Wisconsin Marriage and Family Therapist Licensure

Below are basic guidelines for those wishing to earn their marriage and family therapist licensure in Wisconsin. These procedures rarely change; however, it is wise to contact the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing at (608) 266-2112 to make sure you are on the right track.
Follow these steps to earn your Wisconsin MFT License:
Step One:
You will first need to complete a master's degree, doctoral degree, or a post masters certificate in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. A master's or doctoral degree program in a field that is similar to Marriage and Family Therapy may be acceptable if it is deemed to be by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing.

Step Two:
You will also need to earn 3000 hours of post-graduate supervised work experience. These hours should be completed in no less than 2 years and should include direct client contact. You may only begin accumulating postgraduate supervised experience after you have received a valid marriage and family therapist training certificate.

Step Three:
Next, you can complete a Wisconsin Marriage and Family Therapist licensure application and submit the application to the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. You will need to include all supporting documents and required fees.

Step Four:
Once the Department has reviewed your application, you will be notified of your eligibility to take the national exam and the state administered statutes and rules exam. More information about the national exam can be found on the AMFTRB website.
